• John Spear
Biochemistry major with faculty advisor, Dr. Dexter Criss
When John Spear first got to SUNY Plattsburgh, he didn't know anything about research - just that it was required. Five years, numerous labs and one regional conference presentation later, he is on his way to the Ph.D. program in molecular biophysics at Florida State University. His inspiration? Research advisor (and friend), Dr. Dexter Criss.

My research advisor Dr. Dexter Criss has been very influential upon almost every aspect of my college career here. I developed an early relationship with him playing racketball. That developed into research and from research we just developed a quite friendly relationship. Very approachable, can ask him more questions than chemistry, and kind of the sub person who I go to before anyone else.

He was helpful at first, but let me learn, let me make my mistakes and then learn from them. This research added a lot. First of all, the biggest thing I would say is discipline. Just knowing that I had a responsibility got me to where I needed to be.

Next for me is graduate school at Florida State University and I was accepted into their molecular bio-physics program. And I hope to pursue bio-chemistry and molecular biology actively.

SUNY Plattsburgh felt like a home away from home for me because some of the relationships I built with some of the professors. And not only that, but also in the dorms made some really good friends, the administration here welcomed me with open arms and that kind of gave me a message that I can actually build something here.

Coming in from the city, in a predominately white campus, I thought I wasn't going to find any commonalities with people. I thought that was going to be a struggle for me. But you have a large international student population, a lot of population from the city. I got a bachelors here in Anthropology. I actually graduated with 3.92 GPA, and I could have easily gone to another institution, maybe NYU, maybe Columbia, maybe somewhere else. I chose to stay because this institution has something to offer. And I think that if I can get more of an influence from it and influence it even further myself as a student leader that will be a privilege. I think this is the place to be, because you have people who are going to just open the doors for you.

The hotel/restaurant/tourism department in Plattsburgh is extremely hands on. This experience will definitely be beneficial. I think education is not just sitting behind a desk in the classroom learning. Having that hands on experience, really allows you to apply what you've learned in the classroom and see first hand how it gets done. And coming out of school I think you are going want that experience. It gives you more confidence in what you are going to be doing. And applying for jobs that sort of sets you apart from other students that might not have had an opportunity like you had at Plattsburgh.

I recently just got offered a house management position. Plattsburgh, I stepped onto the campus and knew this is just where I wanted to be. The student body is very diverse. Great group of kids. The professors are extremely knowledgeable. They want you to do well, they want you to succeed. Not only just in school but in your future endeavors as well.

  • Dr. Nancy Elwess
    Associate Professor, Biology
Recipient of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring
Under the guidance of Associate Professor Dr. Nancy Elwess, biology students examine the DNA of ancient Maya skeletons. Plattsburgh is one of the few colleges in the nation that offers its undergraduates an opportunity to work on this cutting-edge research.

The only other previous research in the area of DNA analysis on any ancient Maya skeletons have been on 9 skeletons and 25 skeletons and here we have 588 skeletons.

In the last two years we have won 5 national or international awards with the students doing research and presenting that research at national or international conferences.

To me the importance with the teaching is getting the students from point A to point B. To try to get them where they want to go. So I share with my students the real experience of doing research. From the previous week that I've done in the lab to how does it related to what they are learning in the classroom. Hopefully it will prepare them, I hate to use the cliché, for the "real world". And we are trying to give them real world experiences and life experiences here at college so when they leave us that they are ready for that.

  • Ryan Hayner and Jessica Bakeman
Editors of the college newspaper Cardinal Points
What happens when dedicated journalism students work together? It gets noticed. Cardinal Points is a Pacemaker Finalist - making it one of the top 55 college newspapers in North America. It has been twice selected as New York's best all-around college newspaper, and it's been named an All American seven times. (Now that's teamwork.)

Jessica: I think the hands on experience is something that is an attribute to Plattsburgh's Program.

Ryan: And I learned it not just reading the book and saying I can pass the test with this but it's applied knowledge, I am able to use it in the field.

Jessica: Having the experience on the newspaper staff with a small group of dedicated and talented individuals gives you the opportunity to learn every aspect of the field, in this case journalism, to the point where I feel very free and ready when I get out in the field.

Ryan: You have 6,000 students and you have a faculty that knows the students there. They interact with the students. And I think that's a definite plus to this college.

Jessica: I felt like the doors were very open. Everyone seemed like there were a lot of opportunities here. Also something I saw here that I really didn't see in a lot of schools I visited was a lot of diversity.

Ryan: The four years of experience I have had on Cardinal Points will help me immensely when I go into the professional world.
